At Christmas I attended a Carol Service in the Temple Church in London given by a boys' public school. The singing was superb and included music ranging from the traditional to some of the O Antiphons of Arvo Part. The boys sang with vigour, sensitivity, enthusiasm and conviction - it was a delight to hear music-making of this standard. They were receiving an outstanding musical education but they were also children of the pop culture that dominates our musical life. I have no doubt that their love of classical music is matched by their appreciation of pop in its many forms. How I wish that these excellent musical standards could be found in all schools.
