The music in our parishes is much affected by the knowledge and commitment of the clergy. I fear that most Catholic Seminaries give little thought to the musical formation of their students. I have always felt that a syllabus needs to be established that will ensure that young priests leaving the seminary will be musically literate and have an understanding of the place of music in liturgical celebration. Their experience of liturgy must be complimented by a deep knowledge of music.
