WESTMINSTER ABBEY CHOIR AND THE SISTINE CHAPEL CHOIR
The Director of the Sistine Chapel Choir, Maestro Massimo Palombella, invited me to attend the recent visit of the Westminster Abbey Choir to the Vatican. This historic visit was arranged at the express invitation of the Holy Father who had been greatly impressed by the Abbey choir during his State visit to England in 2010. Both choirs sang at the Papal Mass for Ss. Peter and Paul in St. Peter's Basilica on June 29th. It was an extraordinary event. The Abbey Choir sang some items by themselves and both choirs united to sing the Gloria and Credo from Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli. Hearing these choirs united in the worship of God was deeply moving and their affirmation of belief in the Credo was thrilling. The Credo of Missa Papae Marcelli is one of the great pieces of music and under the inspired direction of Massimo Palombella it sounded superb.
