The aspect of the Sistine Choir's performance in Westminster Cathedral that created the deepest impression was its profound spirituality. The choir entered not only the very nature of music but also its theology. One was aware not so much of its technical musical perfection but much more of the profound meaning of liturgical music. I was fortunate to meet Pope John XXIII at his last general audience just before he died. I was then the Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, and its choir - with me conducting - sang to the Holy Father. He said to me, “The Spirit of God is the Soul of Music.” I was deeply aware of his remark as I listened to the Sistine Choir.
