Just how effective are hymn accompaniment CDs? Obviously when a church hasn't an organist or an organ they can form an important part of worship - but they are very much second best. People can sing with them and produce excellent results. But a CD can't change speed to suit a congregation and as an accompanying instrument it's very deficient. In a funny sort of way they are the modern equivalent of the barrel organ which was a common feature in churches a few hundred years ago. You have to have a speaker system and the dynamic level has to be set correctly. Also, the operator must have a good knowledge of how to use the system.
