The use of Gregorian Chant is essential for the celebration of the Extraordinary Rite of Mass and the entire Service may be sung in chant. The history of chant begins before the birth of Christ and it also has a strong Eastern influence. The chant has formed the basis of monastic worship since medieval times. It was learned by memory and wasn't written down until much later. The written manuscripts give no idea as to rhythm and only give signs over the notes as a guide to the tunes.
