How often do you hear choir members saying that their Director didn't hear the wrong notes? "The Altos (Sopranos .. Tenors .. Basses) were completely out but he never noticed!" Unfortunately this is often true, and it always gives the conductor a bad reputation - either for incompetence or for laziness. The ability to spot wrong notes depends upon two things: a good ear of course, but - even more important - thorough preparation before every rehearsal. You need to know the score backwards, what the individual lines are doing and what notes they should be singing. If you prepare well your mind will instantly be alerted when something goes wrong and your knowledge of the individual lines will tell you exactly where the mistake is.
