We are all aware of St. Augustine's saying that “he who sings, prays twice”. This is very comforting for us musicians but it would be good to look at it in further detail. One can offer musical prayer through singing, listening or praying. Some people find it difficult to visualise prayer through listening and this is very understandable. At first glance listening appears to be very passive but why shouldn't it be? Many pray by leaving their minds silently open to the impact of God's communication. In a way this is similar to meditation. One contemplates the beauty of God through music and it raises our minds to heaven. Listening and praying through just thirty minutes of great spiritual music a day will have an exciting and positive effect on our prayer life.
