WHAT MAKES A GOOD HYMN?

I have recently been involved in composing hymns for a Carmelite friend. We have been discussing the composition of hymns dedicated to contemporary saints. One has been written for Titus Brandsma and another for Edith Stein, both 20th-Century figures murdered in Nazi concentration camps. This has led me to consider very carefully exactly what makes a good hymn.
