I have been reading an article by Paul Murray OP in the Dominican Magazine Religious Life Review on The Silence of Mother Teresa. He quotes a phrase from the Constitution of her Order, The Missionaries of Charity, which tells of "The deep silence of God" and also another of her sayings, "God cannot be found in noise and restlessness". I find it difficult to equate these profound statements with the work which we as musicians are called to do. Music is never silent, it is of its nature sound which is often noisy. I was also struck by a phrase of St. John of God who describes the communication between himself and God as "Silent Music". This reminds me of the description of architecture as "frozen music". These quotations raise the question of the philosophy of music. Is our work spiritual or is it an obstacle to worship?
